The Virtual PAGE 3 of Indian Contemporary ART Gallery Art & Soul - 3rd - 9th Dec '07 Jehangir Art Gallery Sanjay Sawant - 'Forgotten Embers' |
Sanjay Sawant, born 1969 in Mumbai received his BFA in painting from Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai in the year 1989. He has to his credit, received numerous awards, one of them being National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi and Grants like Junior Fellowship from the Cultural Department of India. The artist has exhibited in solo shows both in India and abroad. He has also participated in various group shows. His collections are with NGMA, LKA Chennai and with several public and private collectors in India and abroad. The artist lives & works in Mumbai. Sanjay Sawant’s recent body of work is effervescent to the core. And that is putting it mildly. He jousts with paint and paper, revealing trajectories into an anguished world. Sanjay wants to tell it all. His exuberance is not garnered from a social context like that of life in a city – nor is he engaged in aspects of mass culture and symbolic representations of urbanity and the usual rural ambience of India Tourism Inc. He is solely mesmerized with the fine sensation, the elusive and minor drama behind the main profile of things & happenings. A multiplicity of gestures is scraped out from tough sheets of coloured paper, its front face and the inner canvas sinew of wayward threads. This artiste tries to meet with that appropriate and defining vitality found in a non hierarchical universe of the living and the inanimate. He is going about the job of finding essences. He espies something then amplifies it’s structure till it is stretched, elongated, strained and puckered in graphic liveliness and till an icon of nebulous form comes into being. |
